CITIZENS’ ASSEMBLY ON ELECTORAL REFORM TO HOLD A PUBLIC CONSULTATION MEETING IN ETOBICOKE-LAKESHORE

Local Citizen Assembly Members to Share and Lead Discussion

ETOBICOKE — Citizens in Etobicoke-Lakeshore will have an opportunity to exchange ideas about electoral reform and make their views known to their local Citizens’ Assembly members at a public consultation meeting.

“I encourage all the citizens of our community to learn more about electoral reform, share their perspectives and participate in this ambitious process to renew Ontario’s democracy,” said Laurel Broten, MPP for Etobicoke-Lakeshore. “This marks a historic opportunity for the citizens of Etobicoke-Lakeshore and all Ontarians to have an impact on the future of our province.”

The public consultation meeting in Etobicoke-Lakeshore will be held on Tuesday, January 23, 2007 from 7:00pm – 10:00pm at the LAMP Community Health Centre, located at185 Fifth Street in Etobicoke.

Members of the Citizens’ Assembly are leading public consultations in communities across the province to allow the general public to have their say on electoral reform.  Ontarians will be able to speak directly to Citizens’ Assembly members about what they want them to consider in their recommendation about the province’s electoral system.

There will be a number of opportunities for Ontarians to get involved and learn

through the Citizens’ Assembly process.  For example, members of the public will

be invited to send written submissions to the Citizens’ Assembly.

The Citizens’ Assembly is made up of 103 citizens, one from each of Ontario’s ridings including Etobicoke-Lakeshore and the Chair, George Thomson.  The independent Citizens’ Assembly will assess Ontario’s current electoral system and others, and recommend whether Ontario should keep the current system or adopt a new one.  If the Assembly recommends changing Ontario’s electoral system, all Ontarians will have their say in a referendum on that question.

The Assembly will submit its report to Dr. Marie Bountrogianni, Minister Responsible for Democratic Renewal, on or before May 15, 2007.  For more information about the Citizen’s Assembly and the public consultation meeting go to assembly’s website at www.citizensassembly.gov.on.ca
